The Mars Helicopter Ingenuity was the first vehicle to demonstrate autonomous, powered flight in Mars's extremely thin atmosphere. Achieving this required addressing fundamental challenges in aerodynamics, flight control, and autonomy, as well as reliable communication with the Mars rover under severe bandwidth and latency constraints. While Ingenuity proved the feasibility of aerial scouting, its operation highlighted a broader limitation of planetary exploration architectures that rely on separate flying and driving vehicles. These challenges motivated the development of a single robotic system capable of both aerial and ground mobility. A Caltech-led team developed the Morphobot (M4), a reconfigurable platform that integrates flying and driving into a single machine. By combining multimodal locomotion, M4 enables more efficient traversal of complex terrain while reducing system complexity and mission risk. In this talk, we present key lessons from Ingenuity and explain how they informed M4's design, emphasizing the aerodynamic and flight-control challenges inherent in multimodal robotic systems for planetary exploration.
